SDP Curriculum

Summer Dance Program - Program and Curriculum

Summer Dance Program (SDP), located at Boston Ballet company headquarters in Boston, provides male and female students ages 15-23 with five weeks of intensive pre-professional training in classical ballet technique.

The curriculum based on 5-7 hours of dancing daily includes:

  • Classical ballet technique, pointe, variations, Forsythe-based improvisational technique, and partnering class
  • Separate men’s classes in technique, variations, and men’s conditioning
  • Enrichment classes in jazz, modern, and classical character
  • Core conditioning classes in Pilates, Gyrokinesis, and yoga for dancers
  • Interactive academic lectures with topics including injury prevention, wellness and nutrition, dance history, stage production, music, make-up, and career preparation
  • On-site physical therapy

Performance

Summer Dance Program students work closely with our distinguished faculty to prepare an engaging performance to culminate the program. For the summer of 2007, the SDP performance will include some the most celebrated pieces in ballet history, combining the best from both classical and contemporary repertoire.

Progression for Aspiring Pre-Professionals

The distinctive training methods of SDP have cultivated confident and self- assured dancers, while also providing a stepping stone to other educational and professional forums. Each year students in SDP are considered for Boston Ballet’s second company, BBII, as well as the School’s Trainee Program – both of which are regarded as important entry points to a professional ballet career. Alumni have gone on to join many ballet companies including Boston Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, and New York City Ballet. Boston Ballet School also holds auditions during SDP for any students interested in entering the School in the upcoming year.
