          BALLET

Beginner Level:  Following Back to Basics, open beginner level classes are ideal for students to develop their knowledge of vocabulary through simple barre and centre work.  Students will be introduced to the basic positions, port de bras as well as concepts of croisé, éffacé and écarté and the introduction of basic turns and jumps.

Elementary Level: This level is for students who have a sound knowledge of classical ballet vocabulary and are looking to develop their technique.  The class includes a full barre including simple balances.  Centre exercises now combine elements into movement phrases of two to four different steps including pirouettes and jumps.

Intermediate Level:  This level is intended for students with a full knowledge of barre work and includes more complex exercises and combinations of steps.   Centre work incorporates adage, pirouettes, petit and grand allegro.  Classes run at a faster pace, with an emphasis placed on increased proficiency.

Advanced Level:  This level is for students who are currently studying at a professional level school, or for former professional dancers.  Barre exercises include releve, pirouettes and balances in various positions.  Centre work will have extended combinations of movements, including adage, pirouettes, petit and grand allegro, with an emphasis placed on increased strength and speed.

          PILATES

Our Pilates class starts with a short warm up followed by a well-rounded series of Pilates exercises on the mat. The practice is focused on developing and maintaining dynamic core strength, establish a stable source of movement extending to the extremities and balance strength with flexibility. Emphasis is placed on developing a healthy awareness of posture and breath supporting the flow and efficiency of movement.

          MODERN

Boston Ballet School is so pleased to have Modern dance faculty members Elizebeth Randall, Melodie Jeffery-Cassell and (Tony Award winner) Yo-el Cassell.  Though various styles, students are encouraged to develop an individual style driven by their internal life and the use of weight, space, time, and effort. Dancers will develop an understanding of the connections between their body, the floor and how using momentum and breath allows for a physically expressive body.   Modern classes at BBS include live accompaniment by celebrated musician Martin Case.

          CHARACTER

Character Dance is a specific subdivision of Classical Dance based on national and folkloric traditions that have been stylized and included in classical ballet.  Several classical ballets, including Swan Lake and Don Quixote, feature Character variations, and as such, formal Character training is integral for ballet students, ideally being introduced by the Intermediate level of ballet training.

          LIFELONG DANCE

A way to rediscover your individual spirit and enthusiasm through dance and live music—and experience dance as a social activity.
The classes are designed to help mature students (age 60+) increase their physical strength, body awareness, balance and flexibility though mild ballet exercises. The class was developed and is taught by Boston Ballet School’s expert dance faculty.   It includes live piano accompaniment by experienced accompanists.  The live music includes both familiar classics of the ballet world and also popular piano pieces -- perhaps even some familiar broadway favorites!

        • Dress Code Information:

The only traditional ballet attire we require of our adult students is ballet slippers. Otherwise, students wear what is easy to move in and makes them feel most at ease. For some, this is the traditional leotard and tights; for others, this is closer to typical work-out clothing – sweats, leggings, t-shirts.

Whatever you choose to wear, we ask that it be form fitted, stretchy, allow for freedom of movement and be comfortable. Longer hair should be pulled back away from the face and dangling jewelry is discouraged

We communicate important School information and updates to our students primarily via email – so please make sure we have your email address. This enables you to receive communications such as BBS Connections, the school’s monthly newsletter. Boston Ballet’s website is updated frequently and is a great resource for students.
